Mount Kilimanjaro & Kenya Trek - Machame Route

Few mountains anywhere on Earth has been so enshrouded in myth and romance as Kilimanjaro that for centuries many foreign countries have spoken a majestic mountain so high in equatorial East Africa that it carries an eternal snow cap.

As one of the prized 'Seven Summits' - series of the highest mountains on each of the seven continents - Kilimanjaro is also incidentally one of the highest peaks accessible to hikers in the world. Most of the routes on the mountain involve no technical climbing skills at all and the summit can be reached by a person reasonably fit and determined in mind.

A trip to the summit of Kilmanjaro is analogous to travelling from the Equator to the Arctic as it brings one through virtually every eco-environment that exists on earth: tropical jungle, savannah, alpine moorland, desert, and snowfield and glacier. Regardless of the route taken, the vistas are magnificent and the flora and fauna of the different eco-zones fascinating.

Summitting Kilimanjaro is a dream and a 'must-do' challenge cherished by almost every trekker and mountaineer in the world. The task is by no means easy due to the debilitating high altitude underestimated by many trekkers and this is underscored by the fact that only about a quarter of all climbers managed to make the summit each year.

Day 3 - 15

Mount Kenya Trek - 6 Days Sirimon / Chogoria Route
Our African programme starts with an ascent of Mount Kenya ( the other famous mountain in East Africa ) to its tourist peak of Point Lenana ( the two other higher peaks calls for technical mountaineering skills ) at 4,985-m. This is a good way to acclimatize and enhance our chance of summitting Kilimanjaro. Mt Kenya is one of the most beautiful mountains in all of Africa and along the way, we will have good opportunities to see gorgeous scenery and various unique flora on the mountain.

Mount Kilimanjaro Trek - 6 Days Machame Route
The Machame route, the 'Whisky Route', is the more scenic and challenging route. Unlike the Marangu route where accommodation is in huts, this route needs to be organized on camping basis and indeed offers hikers a more adventourous and rugged experience. The campsites are suitably located to give us many different views of Kibo, the main summit of Kilimanjaro and the neighbouring peaks of Mawenzi and Shira. Our trek is planned to give us the highest chance of reaching the summit successfully. For an easier route with more creature comforts, one can ascend by the Marangu route or if you prefer the route less taken, then ascend by the Rongai route.

Day 16 - 17 Moshi - Singapore
Optional 3-Day Safari

December to March trips: see the migrating herds on the Serengeti Plains. Add in gameviewing in the Ngorongoro Crater for the complete Tanzania safari experience.

June to October trips: witness the migration in the dry-season wildlife paradise of Tarangire, one of Africa’s premier wildlife reserves, where great herds gather along the beautiful Tarangire River, the only permanent water in the Serengeti ecosystem.

As in every big mountain, Kilimanjaro has its own climate, and it is no uncommon to encounter tropical downpours, raging blizzards to gale force winds in your climb and temperatures can reach minus 20 degrees at the summit. Although a high level of physical fitness is required, it is the ability to acclimatize to the thin air that will determine your success on the mountain. With the right mental attitude and determination coupled with adequate preparation, a successful climb is a possibility - as long as you can acclimatize to the thin air.
