Central Java: Merapi, Caving & Borobudur

Yogyakarta – a name that invokes a sense of provocative mystery and cultural depth. On this aspect, we will get to see the beautiful Prambanan temple complex - the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the astonishing  Borobudur temple complex, the famous 9th Century Budhist temple. Its magnificence is reflected in the fact that it survived a volcanic eruption, terrorist bombs and the 2006 earthquake to remain as strong and awe-inspiring as it has ever been.  Be different from the other tourists and come take an elephant trek along Sileng River, which is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.

The main highlight, however is the majestic Mount Merapi - one of the most active stratovolcanoes of Indonesia. The very name meaning “Mountain of Fire”, she soars from the ground to an impressive 2930m. The journey to the top takes 5-6 hours, so we will leave base camp around 1am. We will then be able to catch the beautiful sunrise at the summit, and feast eyes on the surreal and utterly unusual surrounding landscape.

But the fun doesn’t end here! Next up, is the famed Jomblang Cave. Nestled in the Sewu Karst Mountain range, this cave does not just hides startlingly beautiful scenery in its depths, but also offers a dramatic adventure to enter its domain. We will be lowered down the mouth of Jomblang via Single Rope Technique, to the bottom where a lush primeval forest will greet us. Beams of sunlight penetrate through the cave, bringing to light an interior swathed in moss, ferns and shrubs. Following is a visit to a second cave – the  Gua Pindul cave. This offers a different kind of adventure – tubing through its underground river and gazing at the fascinating natural ornaments decorating the interior.
