East Java Gunung Bromo & Semeru Trek

Mount Bromo is an active volcano at 2329m that lies on a stretch of plains known as the Sea of Sand. Nestled inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, located between the regencies of Malang and Lumajang. With rolling mists wrapped snugly around its foot, its dramatic setting is the source of many myths and legends. Climb to the summit in time to catch sun rise and gaze in wonder as the first beams of sun light up the incredible landscape beneath and beyond.

Mt. Semeru is an active volcano, and at 3676m it is the highest mountain on the island of Java. Known as Mahameru by the locals, the “Great Mountain” refers to “Meru” – or Abode of the Gods in Hindu cosmology.  It is inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, located between the regencies of Malang and Lumajang. It lies at the Southern end of the Tengger Volcanic Complex, and its incredible setting is the source of many myths and legends.

Your journey begins with a transfer to Cemoro Lawang, a charming little village hidden within the clouds. You will spend a night here before heading out to Gunung Penanjakan (2770m) the next day to catch the first rays of sun breaking over the horizon.  From this spectacular vantage point, see the volcanic smoke-ridden peak of the magnificent Mt Bromo (2392m), with rolling mists wrapped snugly around its foot.  In the backdrop, you’ll be able to spot Mt. Semeru towering at 3676m, smoke bellowing out its volcanic mouth.

We then head down to climb Mt. Bromo before transferring to the town of Ranu Pani, with breathtaking views during the ride.  The journey to Kalimati the next day will pass through beautiful Ranu Kumbolo lake (2382m). Kalimati is nestled beneath the volcanic cone of Mt Sumeru.

The journey to the summit of Semeru will be an adventure itself, as you feel the earth beneath your feet rumble with every puff of smoke the Great Mountain sends out.  The picturesque trail will show you why this is one of the finest hikes in Indonesia. The climax of your climb will be the amazing view atop the roof of Java, the view – 360 degree panaromic view of the major peaks in East Java.
