The Intrepid Roamer - Knuckles, Horton Plains, Belihul Oya Village Hike and Yala Safari

Upon arrival to Sri Lanka, we will be transferred to the historic city of Kandy. Nestled in the heart of Kandy is the famous Temple of the Tooth. Considered the holiest shrine in Sri Lanka, it is said to house the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha. Encapsulated within a bejeweled gold casket, the sacred canine tooth is kept in a two-storey shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks.

After the memorable cultural excursion, the real fun starts the next day. We will be entering the Knuckles massif – so named because of its strange shape of a clenched fist. These mist-enshrouded hills are a haven for those who like to hike and be rewarded with stunning views. Venture deep into the wilderness to discover waterfalls and various flora and fauna. Trek for another hour, enjoying the spectacular scenery on the way, until you come to one of Sri Lanka’s most remote villages. Spending the night here is like being thrust into the annals of another time long thought forgotten.  The next day you will continue your sojourn through the hilly terrain to emerge on the other side.

You will also be visiting Horton National Plains – terrains of high rocks, grasslands and vast expanses of flat plains, thickly clothed in cloud forests. You will discover the lovely Baker’s Fall, 20m of cascading waters into the jumble of boulders below - and World’s End, a sheer precipice with an 880m drop below.

Belihul Oya is a charming little hamlet with diverse terrain, and you will take on a relaxed hike through paddy fields and rivers, where you will be able to see the local way of life.  Lunch will be at a local village.

Your adventure through the island will end with a jeep safari at Yala National Park – where you’d be able to spot leopards, the Sri Lankan sloth bear, Sri Lankan elephant and many others. You don’t have to go to Kenya for a great safari experience!
