Sri Lankan Cultural Treasures & Safari

Canoeing, Camping, Hiking, Culture and Safari

You will be starting your holiday by canoeing down “Kalu Ganga”, or the “Black River”. En route you will see differing terrains. You will pass the town of Ratnapura, and come across a more serene surrounding with lush greenery on the banks. The expedition will end at the campsite where you will have a Sri Lankan-style BBQ, and local entertainment will be provided!

The next day you will make a quick stop at the Salgala Monastic Complex, a peaceful temple nestled inside a jungle, before transferring to Pinnawala - Sri Lanka’s Elephant Orphanage - a lifeline to orphaned baby elephants and adult elephants lost in the wilderness. Enjoy the opportunity to get up-close and personal with these majestic creatures as they interact with each other. You will also be able to see them bathing in the River Maha Oya. Cross the river and hike past perennial villages and vast paddy fields.

Your adventure across the island continues as you are then taken to the Sigiriya, Lion Rock. This single granite peak contains the ruins of an ancient citadel complex of the 5th century, and dominates the surrounding jungle as it rises 180m above the ground. The view from the summit of the rock promises to take your breath away. That night, you will stay at a local homestay.

The next day you will head to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, where you will cycle around the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, and the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas. The afternoon promises to bring excitement as you go for a jeep safari at the Minneriya National Park to witness the great elephants in their own habitat. Your adventure ends with a final day at the homestay with your gracious hosts.
